Judge declares disaster in Kerr County following rains, flooding
Late Thursday afternoon, July 25, Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly sent a letter and a signed Declaration of Disaster to Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
The declaration comes after heavy rainstorms dropped several inches of precipitation Tuesday, July 23, causing extensive flooding and property damage in West Kerr County and in various other locations around the county.
“Kerr County, Texas, is facing significant threats to life, health and property due to severe storms and flooding,” the county judge wrote in his letter. “The impact of this threat has damaged local roads and sewer systems, as well as flooded homes, schools, and structures.”
“I have determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that an effective response is beyond the capability of Kerr County to control alone,” the judge said, continuing that he was, therefore, requesting that Gov. Abbott declare a state of emergency for Kerr County and issue appropriate directives to deal with the emergency.
The declaration itself noted that the local state of disaster should continue for no more than 7 days following the date of issuance (July 25). The commissioners’ court will discuss extending the order when it meets in regular session on Monday, July 29.
By enacting this declaration, the judge has activated Kerr County, Texas, Emergency Management Plan and cleared the way for possible state resources, if needed.
